Post-Grunge: Canción #1: "Crash" - 12 Stones

Crash fue el tercer single del Self-Titled album de 12 Stones, publicado en 2002. El single, al igual que el disco, no tuvo mucho éxito hasta que el solista del grupo, Paul McCoy, colaboró con Evanescence en su, ya hístorico, tema Bring me to Life (Si, este es el tio que cantó con Amy), en 2003.

A pesar de no ser el primer single del álbum, en mi opinión es de lo mejorcito que ha parido esta banda hasta la fecha, a falta de escuchar su nuevo trabajo, Anthem for the Underdog, publicado este mismo año. Ya os enteraréis si hay algo que merezca la pena escuchar ;)

Rock: Canción #7: "Zombie" - The Cranberries

Zombie fue incluida en el album No Need to Argue, publicado en 1994 por el grupo irlandés The Cranberries. En poco tiempo se pudo percibir como este single se convertiría en un icono de la banda, asaltando las listas de éxitos de todo el mundo, con un #1 en los charts de Modern Rock, y dominando las listas de media Europa.

El tema gira en torno al conflicto de Irlanda del Norte, con una letra contundente y de una fuerza increible. Realmente impresiona y conmueve. Además, la voz de la solista Dolores O'Riordan no hace mas que poner un broche de oro a un tema que, sin duda, será recordado durante mucho tiempo.

Que recuerdos me trae está canción de mis tiempos mozos... (bueno, en realidad era un enano xD).

Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo fue el primer single del album Hefty Fine, publicado por el grupo estadounidense The BloodHound Gang a mediados de 2005.

Al igual que prácticamente todo lo que sale de esta banda, el título de la canción no carece de cierto toque humorístico, bueno, el título y todo el tema. Las palabras Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo hacen referencia al alfabeto fonético aeronáutico, un alfabeto creado para poner en común como pronunciar fonéticamente las letras del abecedario, de tal forma que cualquiera pueda entenderlo, sea cual sea su idioma nativo.

De este modo, las correspondencias de las palabras del título son:

Foxtrot -> F
Uniform-> U
Charlie -> C
Kilo -------> K

El título por tanto deletrea la palabra FUCK (que creo que no hace falta ni que traduzca a estas alturas xD). En general la letra de la canción gira en torno a esto, pero utilizando metáforas y eufemismos muy curiosos (ver el final del videoclip es OBLIGATORIO).

En fin, tema imprescindible este, por mucho que lo escuche no deja de hacerme esbozar una sonrisa. Además, si alguna vez estáis en algún apuro, ya sabéis como deletrear esta palabra, que siempre es de mucha ayuda. (Bendito lenguaje universal este, y no me refiero al aeronáutico)

Rock: Canción #6: "It's My Life" - Bon Jovi

It's My Life fue incluida en el album Crush publicado en 2000 por Bon Jovi. Como primer single del disco, pronto se convirtió en el mayor éxito del grupo estadounidense, alzándose como número 1 en numerosos países.

Jon Bon Jovi (solista) y Richie Sambora (guitarra, voces) reconocieron haberse inspirado en Frank Sinatra al componer la canción, especialmente con ese "I did it my way" tan característico del artista del swing.

Si bien el comienzo de la canción es espectacular y muy prometedor, pronto cae en una algo repetitiva y pegadiza, con sus altibajos, y que destaca (en mi opinión), en las partes previas al estribillo y en el breve riff de guitarra intermedio. Lo que de todos modos no impide que estemos ante un gran trabajo.

Poco más puede decirse de este tema, ya mítico aunque solo sea por la gran acogida que tuvo.

Pet fue incluida en el album Thirteenth Step publicado por el grupo estadounidense A Perfect Circle en Septiembre de 2003. Rápidamente el disco se convirtió en un auténtico éxito, alzándose al segundo puesto de las listas de ventas. En apenas dos meses consiguió el disco de oro y fue certificado disco de platino en 2006.

Si bien Pet no fue single, desprende calidad, originalidad y sobre todo, mensaje, por los cuatro costados. Pero no solo eso, su presencia en el disco causa un impacto enorme cuando le sigue un track de transición con susurros diciendo "Go back to sleep", seguidos de una especie de nana con la melodía de Pet.

El contenido político del tema es indudable, y solo hace falta leer unos cuantos versos para darse cuenta. Esos Counting Bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums son brutales. La letra se orienta principalmente al trato por parte de muchos politicos, y, por qué no, imperios, hacia su pueblo, como si fueran ignorantes y excusasen sus actos en la protección, salvación... etc. Con un especie de "Yo me encargo, tu vete a la cama".

En 2004 Pet fue "remasterizada" en el album eMOTIVE, convertida en Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums, canción sobre la que podría escribirse una entrada entera, y que comienza de forma ESPECTACULAR, con una mezcla progresiva de instrumentos y efectos. Realmente impresionante, puede que más que la original.
